Pedestrian killed by drunken driver along Homestretch Avenue

A pedestrian is the latest road fatality after she was struck down by an alleged drunken driver in the wee hours of Tuesday along Homestretch Avenue, Georgetown. Dead is Malesa Lewis, 23, of La Penitence, Georgetown.
Based on reports received, on the day in question at about 04:30h, motor car with registration number PSS 4025 driven by a 29-year-old male of Charlestown, Georgetown, was driving along Homestretch Avenue at an alleged fast rate of speed.

However, it was alleged that the now dead pedestrian was crossing the said road and ended up in the path of the motor car. The driver also claimed that he applied brakes to avoid a collision but instead, the woman was struck down.
Lewis reportedly fell onto the roadway and received severe bodily injuries. She was nevertheless, picked up in an unconscious state by the emergency medical technicians and rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital where she succumbed while receiving medical attention.
Meanwhile, a breathalyser test was conducted on the driver which revealed that he was above the prescribed limit of alcohol consumption. He was arrested and is expected to be charged before the end of the week.
This is the fourth person to have died in a vehicular accident over the past two days. On Sunday evening, a policeman, Romesh Dass, and 23-year-old Zameer Ali of Anna Regina were killed after the motorcycle on which they were travelling collided with a motor car along Airy Hall Public Road, Region Two (Pomeroon-Supenaam).
At the time of the accident, Dass was riding the motorcycle with Ali as his pillion rider. In addition, on Monday, 21-year-old Joshua Butts, a former national footballer of Stanleytown, New Amsterdam, was killed after he reportedly lost control of the car he was driving at Warren Public Road, East Coast Berbice (ECB).
He reportedly ended up in a nearby trench. He was pulled from the wreckage by public-spirited citizens and taken to the New Amsterdam Public Hospital where he was admitted but later succumbed to his injuries.
