Pedestrian struck, killed by off-duty cop

A 23-year-old man was struck and killed by a motor car driven by an off-duty cop on the Timehri Public Road, East Bank Demerara (EBD).
Dead is Charles Williams of Timehri Public Road, EBD.
Reports are that the accident occurred at about 20:20h on Saturday in the vicinity of Bounty Farm Limited.
According to reports, the 27-year-old off-duty cop was driving motor car PMM 4120 and was proceeding south along the eastern side of the road when Williams, who was walking north on the western side, allegedly ran from west to east across the road, into his path.
The driver claimed that he then applied brakes and pulled in a south-western direction to avoid a collision, however, due to the short distance, the front left side of the vehicle collided with the pedestrian, who fell onto the bonnet, windscreen, and then onto the roadway.
Williams received injuries to his head and about the body.
He was subsequently picked up by Police and public-spirited citizens in an unconscious condition and escorted to the Georgetown Public Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
The body was then taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital Mortuary. A breathalyser test was conducted on the cop and no alcohol was detected. He has, however, been placed under close arrest as the investigation continues. (G15)
