Pedestrian struck, killed in EBD accident

Police are investigating a fatal accident which occurred on Friday, in which a 27-year-old man lost his life on the Diamond Public Road on the East Bank of Demerara, after being struck by a pick-up.
Dead is Vijai Doodnauth of Sea Dam, Diamond Squatting Area, East Bank Demerara.
Based on reports, the accident occurred at about 18:45h. Police said the driver of the motor pick-up alleged that he was proceeding north along the western carriageway in the vicinity of Courts while Doodnauth was standing on the concrete median. The driver claimed that Doodnauth ran into the path of the vehicle, resulting in a collision.
At that time, he was picked up in an unconscious state by the 48-year-old driver and taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital, where he was admitted a patient. Doodnauth received injuries about his head and body. He subsequently succumbed at about 02:22 on Saturday.
The body was transferred to the hospital’s mortuary, awaiting a post-mortem examination. A breathalyser test was conducted on the driver, who is a resident of Lodge Housing Scheme, Georgetown, but no trace of alcohol was found. He remains in custody assisting with the investigation. (G12)
