A 70-year-old pensioner is now hospitalised after he was attacked, beaten, and robbed by two males on Saturday in the vicinity of the Vreed-en-Hoop junction, West Coast Demerara (WCD).
The injured man was identified as Abel Vernon, of Plantain Walk, West Bank Demerara (WBD). He was reportedly on his way home when the incident occurred.
Based on reports received, the suspects approached the pensioner and dealt him several punches about his face and body, relieving him of his mobile phone in the process.
After committing the act, the suspects made good their escape, but while in the vicinity of the West Demerara Regional Hospital, one of them – a 35-year-old man of Crane, WCD – was arrested by Police after the elderly man raised an alarm.
Guyana Times understands that after the robbery, a mobile Police patrol was alerted of the incident and was apprised of which direction the two men ran off. The one suspect was placed in custody, as the Police continue to hunt for his accomplice, a 26-year-old man.
The injured elderly man was taken to the hospital, where he was admitted.
