A 70-year-old pensioner and labourer from 1½ miles, Bartica, Potaro Road, Region Seven (Cuyuni-Mazaruni) appeared before the Anna Regina Magistrate’s Court on Thursday facing charges of raping a child under 16.
Arnold Gonzales is accused of committing the offence against a seven-year-old girl of Essequibo Coast between January 1, 2019, and December 31, 2020, at Suddie, Essequibo Coast.
The charge was read to the accused by Magistrate Ravindra Mohabir, but he was not required to enter a plea.
The prosecutor objected to bail, citing the severity of the offence. However, the magistrate granted Gonzales bail in the sum of $500,000, with the conditions that he stay away from the victim, have no contact with her, and report to the Bartica Police Station every Friday until the trial concludes. The case was adjourned to February 20.
