A pensioner in his sixties was killed on Tuesday afternoon after he was struck down and pinned by a heavy-duty truck along the Anna Catherina Public Road, West Coast Demerara (WCD). Dead is Roy Chanka, who was riding his electric motorcycle at the time of the accident. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Eyewitnesses said the collision occurred around midday.

According to persons who gathered at the scene, the man appeared to have died instantly after becoming trapped beneath the truck. Family members rushed to the location after receiving news of the tragedy. The driver of the truck has since been taken into Police custody and is assisting with investigations. Up to press time, Police had not disclosed details about how the accident occurred. The fatal accident comes amid continued concerns by the Government and the Guyana Police Force (GPF) over speeding heavy-duty trucks and the increasing use of electric bikes on public roadways.

Traffic officials have repeatedly warned that trucks travelling at excessive speeds pose significant danger, particularly along busy corridors on the WCD and East Coast Demerara (ECD). At the same time, traffic officials have raised alarm about the growing number of electric bicycles on the roads, noting that many riders operate them without proper safety gear, training, or full awareness of traffic laws.
The Guyana National Road Safety Council has previously indicated that a combination of speeding, driver inattention and vulnerable road users contributes significantly to road fatalities.
