Pensioner dies in Princes Street collision

A pensioner has become the latest road fatality after he was struck down by a motorcyclist at the intersection of Princes and John Streets, Georgetown on Sunday evening. The dead man has been identified as 66-year-old Orin Roberts of Lot 23 John and Norton Streets, Georgetown.
Based on reports received, the pensioner had been seen standing in the corner of Princes Street, waiting to cross the road, while the motorcyclist, a West Bank Demerara resident, was proceeding along the same roadway.
As the motorcyclist approached John Street, he lost control of the motorcycle, and it crashed into the pedestrian. As a result of the collision, the pedestrian and the motorcyclist fell onto the roadway and sustained injures about their bodies. They were both picked up in an unconscious state by public-spirited citizens and rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital, where they were examined by a doctor on duty, who recommended, based on their injuries, that they should be admitted to the medical facility.
The pedestrian succumbed a few hours later, while the motorcyclist’s condition is regarded as critical. The body of Roberts is at the GPHC mortuary awaiting a post mortem. An investigation into the accident has been launched.
