A pensioner has become the latest road fatality following an accident in the vicinity of Sheriff and Dadanawa Streets, Georgetown on Sunday evening.
The accident reportedly involved a motor car driven by a 43-year-old resident of Mocha Arcadia, East Bank Demerara (EBD) and a motorcycle ridden by the now dead pensioner.
The dead man was later identified as 68-year-old Deon Martin Monize of East La Penitence, Georgetown.
Based on reports received, the motor car was travelling along Sheriff Street while the motorcycle, CF 9989, was travelling in the opposite direction.
However, as both vehicles approached Dadanawa Street, the motor car reportedly made a sudden turn and collided with the motorcycle.
As a result of the collision, Monize was thrown from his motorcycle and landed in a gutter on Sheriff Street, sustaining injuries about the body.
With the assistance of public-spirited citizens, the injured man was picked up in an unconscious state and placed in the same car that was involved in the accident and taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital. While there, he was examined by a doctor on duty who pronounced him dead.
His body was taken to the Memorial Gardens Mortuary to await a post-mortem. The driver of the car was arrested and was currently assisting the Police in their investigations.
Monize is the second person to have died in a vehicular accident over the weekend. On Saturday evening, Tulsiram Rajkumar, 59, of Golden Fleece, Essequibo Coast, Region Two (Pomeroon-Supenaam), was killed by a speeding car.
It was reported that on the night in question about 18:30h, Rajkumar was heading home along the Golden Fleece Public Road when he collided with the speeding car driven by a 57-year-old man of Perseverance, Essequibo Coast.
As a result of the impact, Rajkumar was tossed into the air and landed on the roadway, sustaining severe injuries. He was reportedly bleeding profusely from his head.
Soon after, he was picked up in an unconscious state and taken to the Suddie Public Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The driver of the motor car was detained as Police continued their investigations.
