Pensioner feared dead after boat capsizes in Mazaruni River

A pensioner is feared dead following a boat mishap at Gatie Falls, Semang Creek, Middle Mazaruni River in Region Seven (Cuyuni-Mazaruni).
The missing man has been identified as 63-year-old Clement Morgan of West Ruimveldt, Georgetown.
Based on reports received, Morgan joined a nine-foot aluminium boat at around 10:00h on Monday with another occupant, Sanaika Jacobs, and the captain, Marvin Andrews, of Cane Grove, Mahaica, East Coast Demerara.
At the time, the vessel was heading to the Office of the Guyana Geology and Mines Commission (GGMC) at Issano.
However, the vessel then left the GGMC Office at around 15:30h and was en route to Semang Backdam.
Guyana Times understands that at around 20:30h, whilst navigating through Gatie Falls, the 40-horsepower outboard engine encountered mechanical problems. As a result of the rapids and the heavy current of the water, the boat capsized.
Andrews and Jacobs managed to swim to safety but Morgan disappeared in the murky water. Meanwhile, the police received the report and a team was immediately deployed to the area.
Up to press time, the man’s body was not recovered.
