An elderly cyclist was on Thursday killed after a drunken driver lost control of the car he was driving in the vicinity of Coffee Grove Public Road, Essequibo Coast. Dead is 73-year-old Percy Lashley of Lima Sands, Essequibo Coast.
Information reaching Guyana Times revealed that the motorcar bearing registration number PVV 8733 driven by a 30-year-old was proceeding along the roadway at a fast rate when he lost control while negotiating a turn and collided with the pedal cyclist.
The pensioner received injuries as a result of the collision and was rushed to the Suddie Public Hospital where he died while receiving medical attention.
A breathalyser test was administered to the driver of the motorcar and it proved that he had exceeded the legal level of alcohol consumption. He was arrested and is assisting traffic ranks with investigations.
Back in 2016, the driver was charged and fined $7500 after he pleaded guilty to driving under the influence of alcohol.
The body of the elderly man was taken to a funeral home where it awaits a post-mortem examination which is expected to be conducted on Wednesday.
