Pensioner killed by speeding car

A 72-year-old woman was killed early Tuesday morning after she was struck by a speeding car on Brickdam, Georgetown, while on her way to uplift her pension from the Bourda Post Office.
Dead is Joyclyn Joseph, of YY Bent Street, Wortmanville, Georgetown. The accident occurred sometime around 04:30h at the intersection of Winter Place and Brickdam. At the time, she was cladded in a white top, orange skirt and black sneakers.
Police investigations revealed that motorcar PLL 2838 driven by a 35-year-old labourer of A Field Sophia, Greater Georgetown, was proceeding East along Brickdam, allegedly at a fast rate, in haste to pass the traffic lights at the intersection of Winter Place. The light was reportedly showing “green” with a few seconds remaining.
However, as the car sped across the intersection, it came into contact with the elderly woman, who was said to be crossing the road from South to North. As a result of the impact, she was reportedly dragged about 39 meters before the vehicle came to a halt some 158 meters from the point of impact, investigators recorded.
Joseph’s left foot was severed as a result of the accident. She was pronounced dead at the scene by emergency medical personnel. Her body is currently at the Lyken Funeral Home, where it was identified late Tuesday afternoon. A post-mortem examination is expected to be conducted sometime today.
Meanwhile, a breathalyser test was administered to the driver of the motor car and no alcohol was detected in his breath. Nevertheless, he was taken into custody and is assisting with the investigation.
According to the woman’s daughter, Shirley, her mother left home early Tuesday morning to uplift her pension.
