Pensioner remanded for ganja possession

A pensioner on Monday morning told Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan to “legalise it” after a charge of possession of narcotics for the purpose of trafficking was brought against him.
Sixty-eight-year-old John Lovell, of Lot 31 Providence, East Bank Demerara (EBD), denied that he had 1361 grams of cannabis in his possession.
The narcotic was reportedly found hidden in a haversack, which he was carrying when Police ranks swooped down on him.
However, Lovell, in a bail application on his own behalf, told Magistrate Ann McLennan that it was the 21st Century and Guyana needed to legalise marijuana.
He further told McLennan that a trial would prove his innocence in the matter. He was, nonetheless, remanded to prison until August 7. The case will continue at the Matthews Ridge Magistrate’s Court.
