Permaul leads Guyana Harpy Eagles to thrilling 1-wicket win
Guyana Harpy Eagles prevailed in the opening round of the Cricket West Indies (CWI) Regional Four-Day Championships at Queen’s Park Oval, with a one-wicket win against Windward Islands Volcanoes. Veerasammy Permaul scored an unbeaten 20 alongside Nial Smith, who made four, as Harpy Eagles chased down 203 in 69.3 overs.
Led by Permaul’s five-wicket haul, Guyana Harpy Eagles cleaned up Windward Islands for 190 in the second innings of the first match of the Regional Four-Day Championships. At tea on day four, Harpy Eagles were in total control on 120-3 with Chandrapaul Hemraj hitting a half-century to set-up the chase of 203 runs.
Volcanoes started the final day on 157-7, but added 33 runs. Permaul ended with 5-53 as Larry Edward top-scored with 43. In pursuit of the target, Harpy Eagles openers Tagenarine Chanderpaul and Hemraj added 89 runs together. Hemraj made a brisk 60 while young Chanderpaul scored 28.
At the tea interval, off-spinner Kenneth Dember claimed three wickets for 27 runs. Harpy Eagles required 83 runs with seven wickets in hand in the final session of this opening fixture. The Harpy Eagles were 110-3, and lost seven wickets, The off-spinner Dember, who bowled non-stop since lunch, ended with 5-80 in 29.3 overs while Edward had 3-11 in eight overs.
Smith joined Permaul at 183-9 and the duo showed grit, something most of the other batsmen lacked. Permaul hit one behind point and that was the winning moment for Harpy Eagles. The next match is set for February 16, when Harpy Eagles will take on Leeward Islands Hurricanes at Queen’s Park.
