Home Sports Persistent rain forces postponement of final matches
GCB/Hand-in-Hand U-19 50-over…
Torrential rainfall has caused the final round matches in the Guyana Cricket Board (GCB) Hand-In-Hand Under-19 Inter-county 50-over tournament to be rescheduled as no play was possible on Friday at the Georgetown Cricket Club (GCC), Bourda and the Demerara Cricket Club (DCC).
A press release sent by the Guyana Cricket Board stated “Due to persistent inclement weather, the third round and the final of the GCB/HIH U-19 50-Overs Inter-County 2016 Competition has been rescheduled until further notice”.
Both of the two rounds played were affected by rain but results were possible as Demerara, Essequibo and the Select Under-17s secured wins.
The first round matches saw Demerara make light work of Essequibo; chasing 181 in 38 overs, Essequibo were blown away for just 56 in 28.3 overs. Ronaldo Ali-Mohamed completed a fine all-round performance after making a defiant 53 to return with the ball claiming three early wickets, finishing with three wickets for seven runs off 5 overs. Keshram Seyhodan wrecked the middle and lower order to finish with impressive figures of 4/9 off five tidy overs of left-arm spin.
At the Enterprise ground a brilliant opening stand from home-boy and captain Bhaskar Yadram and Sachin Singh. The two displayed good discipline, appeared very confident and in command, as their tactical display was characterized by great judgment, selectivity and admirable execution. The proficiency of the opening stands took the select U-17s to 108 before Sachin Singh was dismissed for 43. Then Deon Venture was dismissed by Joel Seetaram for duck, to make the score 108/2. Joshua Persaud joined Yadram and together they took the score to 127/2 in 22.5 overs, to give the select U-17s victory by eight wickets against Berbice.
The other two rounds saw Essequibo and Demerara also recording victories.
As it stands, defending champions Demerara currently have the most points with 13.04 points, followed by the Select Under-17s 11.03, Essequibo 10.05 and Berbice 4.00 points.
Teams were rewarded eight points for a win, two points for no result, 0.3 point for every fast bowling wicket; in addition, one point was awarded for bowling a team under 40 overs.
