Persons with disabilities trained to build blocks in Linden

The Human Services and Social Security Ministry is continuing efforts to empower persons living with disabilities through skills training programmes.
In an effort to create employment and business opportunities for a vulnerable segment of society, the Ministry’s Support Services for Persons with Disabilities Unit conducted a five-day block-making training in Region Ten at the Linden Multi-Complex Hall in Wismar.
According to a DPI report, 20 persons participated in the initiative. The training combined both theoretical and practical sessions, giving participants hands-on experience in mixing materials, making, moving and storing cement blocks.
Training Officer at the Ministry, Nicklett Powers-Douglas, explained that the initiative forms part of the Ministry’s continued drive to equip persons with practical skills that can improve their livelihoods and promote greater independence.
The Ministry, the DPI report stated, hopes the programme will help participants secure employment, establish or expand small businesses, strengthen income-generating opportunities and improve their quality of life.
Throughout the training, participants were guided by trainers and Ministry officials, and each person was allowed to make at least two six-inch concrete blocks, regardless of their disability.
According to the Ministry, participants remained fully engaged throughout the sessions and displayed enthusiasm and interest in learning the trade.
Relatives of several participants also praised the initiative, noting the positive impact it can have on persons living with disabilities.
