Members of a community in Peter’s Hall, on the East Bank of Demerara (EBD), which is located behind the Providence National Stadium, are now pleading for their cries to be heard as they have been without electricity for the last eight years.
Although the community has access to running water, there has been no move by the authorities to provide electricity to its inhabitants.
In fact, residents informed Guyana Times that electricity poles have not yet been installed in the area. It should be noted that one part of Peter’s Hall has electricity, so not the entire community is being affected.
The affected residents are calling for Government’s intervention, pointing to the threats posed to their safety and that of their families. They have also explained that many homes in the area have been burglarised.
One resident explained that she has been robbed on many occasions while making her way home in the dark.
“That is why as soon as night step in; everybody does lock up and go indoors because we are now living in fear. Every morning you wake up you have to hear that somebody house get broken into… again” the woman cried.
Another single mother told this publication that her daughter had to move away to live with relatives to go to school because of how unsafe the area is. “Every time I want to see her and I bring her over, as soon as night step it, the child does start to cry,” the woman said.
Guyana Times was informed that residents have sent letters to a number of Government Ministers, on numerous occasions, highlighting the situation. However, they have not received any response or acknowledgement.
“It is like no one cares about us, that is how we are feeling because it has been eight years now, it is high time we get electricity in this area,” one resident said.
This publication made numerous calls to the Public Infrastructure and Junior Public Infrastructure Ministers but all calls went unanswered.
