Pillion rider dies after motorcycle crashes into stone pile

A pillion rider was on Sunday evening killed after the motorcycle on which he was travelling crashed into a pile of stones along Mandela Avenue, Georgetown. Dead is 20-year-old Kareem Powley of Tucville, North East La Penitence, Georgetown.

Dead: Kareem Powley

Police preliminary investigations revealed that on the day in question at about 22:30h, the motorcycle bearing registration number CK 7783, ridden by 21-year-old Joshua Mentore of Pattensen, Greater Georgetown, was heading along Mandela Avenue at a fast rate of speed.
However, the motorcyclist alleged that a motor car which was driving in the same direction swerved to avoid a pothole. This, however, resulted in the motorcyclist losing control and colliding with a pile of stones which was on the parapet.
As a result of the collision, both the driver and Powley fell onto the roadway and sustained injuries about their bodies.
Powley was picked up in an unconscious state by the EMT but succumbed to his injuries while receiving medical attention. His body was taken to Lyken’s Funeral Home awaiting a post-mortem.
A breathalyser test was conducted on Mentore but there was no trace of alcohol in his system. Charges are expected to be instituted shortly.
