Plaisance woman caught with ganja at Lusignan Prison
A woman who attempted to smuggle cannabis to a prisoner in the Lusignan Prison has been caught in the act and handed over to the Police.

Tiffany Grant of Prince William Street, Plaisance, East Coast Demerara was arrested on Wednesday morning after she was found with a quantity of cannabis while at the prison on the East Coast of Demerara. Authorities found the drugs, amounting to 9.7 grams, in a black plastic bag wrapped with transparent plastic in the woman’s bag.
The woman was handed over to the Police after they arrived at the location. She remains in custody, pending charges.
Attempts to smuggle items into the prisons have prompted the Director of Prisons, Nicklon Elliot, to re-emphasise that the prison authorities have seen an increased attempt by civilians to smuggle prohibited items into the prison. Elliot said smuggling contraband into a correctional facility is an offence that has serious consequences. He has called on civilians to recognise the dangers at which they place themselves, society, inmates, and officers by engaging in the trade of contraband within the walls of the prison.
The ganja that was found in the woman’s possession
Just a month ago, a young woman of ‘C’ Field, Sophia, Greater Georgetown was arrested after she was caught attempting to smuggle cannabis concealed in a pair of sneakers into the Camp Street Prison in Georgetown.
The 21-year-old woman was apprehended at the prison where she had gone to deliver the item to an inmate.
Last year, the Guyana Prison Service introduced a “Stop and Search” initiative within the confines of each prison location. It is aimed at ending the continued flow of contraband being smuggled into the prisons.
The Director of Prisons had said that while there is increased monitoring and surveillance at all prison locations, it has been observed that several attempts were being made by members of the public to throw contraband (narcotics and cigarettes) over the prison fences.
As such, he indicated that the GPS has erected signs at strategic points outside of the prisons, warning the public to desist, and detailing the consequences attached to such an act. (G9)
