The architectural design for the construction of a new building to house the Region 10 (Upper Demerara-Berbice) Democratic Council (RDC) has been completed and Councillors have been given a sneak peek.
Regional Chairman Renis Morian recently facilitated the RDC Councillors having a look at the official plan, which was executed by D Mac’s Design Solutions Architectural and Drafting Services.
Almost a year ago, Deputy Regional Executive Officer (DREO) Maylene Stephen has disclosed that $10 million had been budgeted to offset the architectural design of the building, which was scheduled to be completed by 2020.
“We’re not going to be getting it this year (2016); however, the Ministry has given us $10 million to do the drawing, so we have to hire a consultant. So that will entail how the building would look. By 2020, we will have our new building,” Stephen had announced.
The present RDC building is situated at Co-op Crescent and Republic Avenue, Mackenzie, Linden. Former Regional Chairman Sharma Solomon, during his tenure, had voiced several concerns over the present RDC edifice, pointing to issues of safety. Solomon had pointed out that the building was sinking and the structure could not withstand the number of staff.
Several other health and safety violations were also outlined by the previous Regional Chairman.
