The 4th edition of the Prime Minister’s T20 Cup, the premier softball competition in Guyana, is set to be held from Friday November 27 to Sunday November 29, and its staging would be in collaboration with the Department of Culture, Youth and Sport.
Despite the lack of spectators, President of the Georgetown Softball Cricket League Inc (GSCL), Ian John, is optimistic that the tournament would generate the excitement it usual does.
Speaking with Guyana Times Sport, John was asked what this tournament brings to the table, and his response was: “We detect a sense of excitement as per norm, with the build-up of this tournament. We were hoping to have a bigger tournament this year, but because of COVID-19, that was not to be. Nevertheless, we are going ahead with what we have in our three categories.
“With the weather looking gloomy, we are still confident that the tournament will go ahead as planned. In terms of the preparation, the teams are preparing as per norm, as we know softball is played in all sorts of weather, but we still prefer that ideal weather to host our tournament. Despite that, the teams have been preparing themselves and getting ready for the tournament.”
John disclosed that, from the first ball bowled, things will be very exciting and competitive in all three categories of the tournament being contested.
He also noted that several players are coming in and going out of Guyana when he cautioned that players must do their utmost to stay healthy and safe from the COVID-19 pandemic.
John has highly praised the COVID-19 Task Force for permitting the tournament to take place, and has pledged that the GSCL would do its best to ensure the protocol is completely followed and to the best standard.
Asked about the new format being employed in this edition, John said, “This new format is not the ideal situation, but we have to follow the guidelines and compete. Although the crowds would be lacking, the players are still excited to go out and show their skills. We are hoping that the plans we have on stream would become reality in 2021 and beyond.
“I should note that the teams are happy, no matter the restrictions; they are extremely happy, and I pray that God grants us great weather so we can run off a successful tournament.”
John has also declared that he would like to thank all the sponsors for coming on board. He urged the teams to please be on time as, with the year drawing to a close, darkness quickly descends on activities.
Further, he stated that the law governing the competition is that each team knows what it must do, and be ready and prepared to so do on time. The games will commence at 09:00 hrs. daily, while the finals will be held at the Everest Cricket Club ground during the course of the day.
