PM confirms De Willem man died from drowning

Just hours after the body of 26-year-old Rajendra Persaud was fished out of the Atlantic Ocean, Police were able to confirm that the young man died from drowning, ruling out any suspicion of foul play.

Reports are that Persaud, who resided of Lot 16 De Willem South, West Coast Demerara, went missing after we was swept away by waves during an early morning swim on Sunday.
According to information reaching Guyana Times, the 26-year-old had spent Saturday night by a friend, and was joined by two other counterparts as they made their way to Cinderella Dam, Zeelugt, East Bank Essequibo the following morning.
While swimming, the young man went into the deep and never resurfaced alive. His friends reportedly left him to drown without making attempts to rush to his rescue. His body was retrieved later that afternoon at the said location.
This publication understands that the friends panicked, and did not inform the dead man’s parents about what had transpired until after a report was made to the police.
The three men were taken into custody, at the Leonora Police Station, but were subsequently released after the post mortem proved that Persaud died as a result of drowning. His body is expected to be cremated on Wednesday.
