PM Office to prepare budget to cater for COVID-19 relief, other disasters

Prime Minister, Retired Brigadier Mark Phillips on Sunday announced that a budget is being prepared for additional COVID-19 relief supplies that will benefit the entire of Guyana.

The Prime Minister made this comment while conducting an on-site assessment of the Civil Defence Commission’s (CDC) Headquarters and storage facility, located at the National Gymnasium.
However, he said this budget will be made public when that is approved.
“As we plan the budget for CDC, we intend to cater for COVID-19 relief, and any other disasters or complex emergencies, in Guyana, for the rest of 2020,” Prime Minister Phillips posited.
However, a new building is being constructed at CDC’s Headquarters, that will help to further facilitate operations that will better help the Commission.
The storage facility encases COVID-19 relief supplies that are expected to provide a helping hand to families and communities that are affected by the pandemic,
Phillips underscored that one of his responsibilities is to oversee the work of the CDC. He related that relief is not just for COVID-19, but for other forms of disasters.

“So far I am satisfied with what I see… I am satisfied with the efforts of the CDC. The whole effort is to complement the families that have been impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic,” he said.
Since the outbreak of the deadly disease, the CDC has been assisting in the fight against the virus. CDC’s Director General, Lieutenant Colonel, Kester Craig, and his team, along with Minister of Amerindian Affairs, Pauline Sukhai, and Minister of Local Government and Regional Development, Nigel Dharamlall, visited Regions 8 and 9, to distribute food hampers and other COVID-19 relief supplies to those are affected by the novel virus.

In an interview with reporters, Prime Minister Phillips said Region 1 is the focus area for the new week. Following that, Region 7 will be tackled. He said this is due to a number of issues that were brought to his attention in that region.
