Four persons have been arrested following the discovery of over 8 kilograms of marijuana during two Police busts.
Reports are that at about 15:00h on Tuesday, Police ranks acting on information went to Barima Line in Baramita, Region One (Barima-Waini), where they contacted two unemployed men: a 24-year-old of Tuschen, East Bank Essequibo (EBE), and a 32-year-old of First Street Cummings Lodge, East Coast Demerara (ECD).
Searches conducted on their persons and personal belongings revealed four transparent plastic parcels, each containing seeds, leaves, and stems which, when weighed, amounted to 387.7 grammes.
Both these men were arrested and placed into custody at the Baramita Police Station, pending further investigations.
Meanwhile, Police ranks, again acting on information, on Tuesday intercepted a minibus in the vicinity of Orangestein, EBE and found therein a haversack containing 7,752.8 grammes (17 pounds) of marijuana.
Commander for Regional Division Number Three, Senior Superintendent Mahendra Siwnarine, has said that at around 17:20h, ranks stopped an orange-coloured Pitbull minibus that was travelling on the public road at Orangestein.
The ranks conducted a search of the minibus and the four occupants, during which, at the bottom of the rear seat, a black haversack was found containing ten (10) bulky and transparent plastic parcels containing a number of leaves, seeds, and stems suspected to be cannabis.
The passengers were questioned, and were all escorted to the Parika Police Station, along with the minibus. There, further investigations carried out led to the arrest of two of the passengers: a 28-year-old taxi driver of Charlotte Street, Georgetown and a 36-year-old labourer of Zeelugt, EBE.
The two suspects were told of offence, but they both denied that the drugs belonged to them. All four suspects were placed in custody pending charges. Investigations are ongoing. (G9)
