In a decisive move to ensure public safety and the protection animals, the Guyana Police Force (GPF) conducted a search operation in the Orealla Station district, Region Six (East Berbice-Corentyne), targeting the illegal sale of fireworks.
Approximately 11 shops were scrutinised, leading to the confiscation of a significant quantity of prohibited fireworks.
Over the past years, the GPF has intensified its efforts to curb the sale of firecrackers and other explosives during the holiday season. This proactive stance is aimed at safeguarding animals and ensuring the well-being of the public.
The initiative follows concerns raised by the Guyana Veterinary Board, which emphasised the adverse impact of pyrotechnics on animals. A panel discussion involving key stakeholders, including the Guyana Wildlife Conservation and Management Commission (GWCMC), the Bar Association of Guyana, the Guyana Livestock Development Authority (GLDA), and the Guyana Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (GSPCA), highlighted the need for stricter regulations.
