Police destroy $3.4M in ganja during raids in Berbice River

Police have destroyed an estimated $3.4 million in ganja during eradication exercises conducted in the Berbice riverine community of Gatetroy and DeVeldt villages in Region Six (East Berbice-Corentyne).
The raid, lasting more than 15 hours, was made on Wednesday by a team of ‘B’ Division Police ranks.

Reportedly acting on information received, they travelled to a house at DeVeldt Village on the eastern bank of the Berbice River, and when they arrived, they saw a man running away from the building. Ranks reportedly gave chase, but the man escaped in some bushes.

However, a search was conducted on the premises, and several guns and rounds of ammunition were found concealed under the floor boards of the house. The items found include one double-barrel 12-gauge shotgun, one 20-gauge shotgun, one .32 shotgun, and two OPS air guns. In addition, nine 12-gauge, one 20-gauge, and five .32 cartridges were found at the location. The firearms and ammunition were confiscated and subsequently taken to the Central Police Station as investigations continue.

Ranks then travelled to Gatetroy Village, where a partly harvested marijuana field and camps were discovered. The field consisted of approximately three hundred plants measuring between four and six feet in height.

The Police have said that the illegal plants destroyed have an estimated value of $3.4M. The camps found at Gatetroy were also destroyed.
