Police destroy ganja fields during exercise in Berbice River

– 3 in custody pending charges

The Police have destroyed three cannabis fields that were discovered during a drug eradication exercise at Saint Lust, Berbice River on Wednesday.
Based on reports received, the operation commenced at about 6:30h and lasted for several hours. On the day in question, upon approaching one of the suspected marijuana farms, the Police saw three males working in the fields, and quick response by the Police led to their arrest.

While on that farm, another one was discovered close by. The two farms, according to the Police, were about 13 acres in size and contained about 40,000 cannabis plants. An addition 1,000 plants were found in a nursery, and
an estimated 50,000 seeds were also unearthed in a camp that was found on these farms. Moreover, two 12-gauge shotgun cartridges along with 40lbs of dried cannabis were found.

The plants and the camps were subsequently destroyed by fire.
Meanwhile, the three men who were arrested were escorted to the Kwakwani Police Station along with the cartridges and samples of the cannabis plants. The men were placed in custody while the exhibits were lodged.
Further searches were carried out in another area, and another field was found. This one reportedly measured about one acre and contained roughly 3000 plants, with each plant measuring between four and five feet in length.
This farm also housed an abandoned camp, which also was destroyed by fire.
