Police destroy over 26,000 kg in ganja

As ranks of the Police narcotics branch continue their eradication exercise, a 10-hour operation in the Berbice River has led to the destruction of several acres of cannabis and nine camps. Based on reports, the camps were found at Hofwerk and Gatetroy, located several miles out of New Amsterdam.

In addition, in excess of 8000 cannabis plants, ranging from two to six feet in height with an estimated weight of 17,000 kilograms, were found under cultivation.

Also, a quantity of dried and packaged marijuana was found under makeshift tents. The packaged ganja amounted to 9000 kilograms when weighed. No one

has been arrested, but Police are continuing their investigations.

In the latter part of September, Police ranks in Essequibo, Region Two (Pomeroon-Supenaam) and Berbice had arrested five men in two separate drug eradication exercises.

In Berbice, two men were busted with a quarter kilogram of cannabis, which they tried to discard after being caught smoking a ‘joint’.ganja-2

Meanwhile, in Essequibo, during a 12-hour drug eradication exercise at Araray Village, Upper Essequibo, ranks stumbled upon several acres of marijuana. In excess of nine acres of cultivated cannabis with about 8000 plants ranging in heights from one foot to 10 feet, several nurseries with over 3000 seedlings, along with two makeshift tents were found and destroyed.

Three males, who were found tending to the plants, were taken into custody and charged with cultivating prohibited plants.
