Police are on the hunt for an East Canje man following the death of Omesh Seelall, 21, also called ‘Rovin’ who was hit on his head.
The man of Betsy Ground Village, East Canje, Berbice, Region Six (East Berbice/Corentyne), was hit on the head by a fellow villager on April 17.
Following the incident, he was taken to New Amsterdam Hospital in an unconsciousness state and later transferred to Georgetown Public Hospital but never regained consciousness up to the time of his death.
Speaking with this publication, several villagers said that shortly after the incident the alleged perpetrator went into hiding. As police hunt for him, a close relative of the suspect has been taken into custody.
According to the dead man’s father, his son’s attacker is known to the family.
“Dem boys does come right here and borrow me bicycle to go an distribute milk; me son and them is not really any friend. But still I can’t understand what went wrong; dem boys know one another,” the father said.
Eyewitnesses recalled that Seelall was imbibing with friends at a local shop and after parting company went across the road and was lots from a wedding house when he was attacked. At the time there were scores of persons in the vicinity. “He (attacker) just run across the road and pull out a piece of wood from the donkey cart and clap one lash on the boy; the boy ent do he nothing. One lash straight at the back of he head,” one eyewitness related.
Another person said the incident took place about one minute after ‘Rovin’ walked out of the rum shop. “I can’t say if he and the man had any mouth talk [disagreement], but is like one minute after he walk out I hear the noise and when I run out I see he lying on the ground an we pic he up an carry he to the hospital.”
A post-mortem is to be performed today.
