Police launch investigation after car goes up in flames
The Guyana Police Force is investigating an incident of suspected arson after a motor car went up in flames on Friday evening at Lot 162 Hibiscus Avenue, AA Eccles, East Bank Demerara (EBD).
The Guyana Fire Service in a release to the media stated that it received a report at about 20:17h and a water tender from the Eccles Fire Station immediately went to the location.
Upon arrival, firefighters observed a vehicle on fire and quickly sprang into action to extinguish the blaze. The fire was subsequently extinguished but the vehicle and its contents were destroyed.
It is suspected that the fire may have been the result of a malicious act.
“However, when questioned, the presumed owner/driver was uncooperative and refused to provide firefighters with information regarding the vehicle and the fire, highlighting that they had not called the fire station nor made the report,” the GFS added.
As such, the matter was referred to the Police for further investigation.
Further, the Guyana Fire Service stated that it is mandated to respond to all fire reports and is therefore appealing to citizens to cooperate with ranks in providing the required information.
“All fires must be reported to the GFS, which is the sole agency with the responsibility for preventing and extinguishing fires within the country.”
