Police ramp up community outreach in Essequibo Coast, Northwest District

The Guyana Police Force (GPF) conducted a series of community outreach exercises across Regional Division Two engaging residents and business owners on matters of public safety and community welfare. On Thursday last ranks from the Police Force visited Capoey Village, Essequibo Coast (Pomeroon-Supenaam). Corporal Hardat, Detective Corporal Livan, Constable Persaud and Constable Roberts interacted with shop owners and residents, discussing waterway safety, the importance of wearing life jackets and avoiding travel at night. Residents were reminded of the legal prohibitions on selling alcoholic beverages and cigarettes to minors under 18, as well as the requirement for businesses to display appropriate signage.

The officers also addressed issues including drug abuse, reckless driving by truck operators, domestic violence, noise nuisance and the timely reporting of crimes and illegal activities. Motorcycle operators were advised to ensure their documents and driver’s licences were valid. The ranks highlighted services available at the Anna Regina Police Station, such as Police clearance and passport processing and informed residents of free access to the Zara Computer Centre to improve computer skills. The following day, Deputy Commander of Regional Division Two, Superintendent Rovin Das, along with Inspector T. Beharry, Sergeant Nankishore, and other ranks, conducted a similar outreach at Mashabo Mission, Essequibo Coast. The exercise focused on fostering trust, raising awareness and strengthening partnerships between the Police and the community. Residents raised concerns regarding the illegal sale of alcohol and noise nuisance caused by motorcyclists, which were addressed by the Deputy Commander. On Saturday, officers from the Acquero Police Station, including Detective Corporal McKend and Rural Constables Sutton, Norton and Benjamin, carried out an outreach at Huradiah Village, Moruca, Northwest District, Region One (Barima-Waini). Residents were briefed on the role of rural constables and the Community Policing Group, and discussions covered issues such as noise nuisance, the sale and abuse of alcohol and illicit drugs, speeding on roads, domestic violence, school dropouts and teenage pregnancy. Residents were encouraged to remain vigilant and report any unusual or suspicious activity to the Police.
