Police warn public about fake traffic fine text message scam

The Guyana Police Force (GPF) has issued a public warning about a fraudulent scheme involving fake text messages that falsely claim to be official traffic fine notices issued by the Force. In a statement, the GPF said the scam messages inform recipients that they have outstanding traffic fines and threaten legal action, financial penalties, or court proceedings unless payment is made within a specified period. The messages also direct recipients to a fraudulent website where they are prompted to provide personal and financial information. The Police Force stressed that the messages are not authentic and did not originate from the GPF.
The public is being urged not to click on suspicious links contained in unsolicited text messages, provide personal, banking or payment information on unverified websites, or make payments through any platform other than the GPF’s official online payment portal. According to the GPF, its only official website is www.guyanapoliceforce.gy, and persons wishing to verify or pay traffic fines should do so only through the official portal accessible via that website.
The Force is also encouraging anyone who receives one of the fraudulent messages to delete it immediately, report it to the GPF and warn family members and friends, particularly elderly and vulnerable persons, who may be targeted by the scam.
The GPF said it is actively investigating the matter and is working with the relevant authorities to identify those responsible. It also thanked the public for its cooperation as efforts continue to combat cyber-enabled fraud and protect citizens from online scams.
