In light of reports that an 11-year-old pupil attached to the Edinburgh Primary School, East Bank Berbice (EBB), Region Six (East Berbice-Corentyne) was assaulted by two other pupils while sitting the National Grade Six Assessment (NGSA) examinations, the Police have confirmed that a joint investigation has been launched with the welfare officials.
According to the Police, the matter was reported by a parent on April 29, 2026, after the child alleged that he was assaulted by two pupils while at school.
“Following the report, the parents and children involved were contacted at the Sisters Police Station, where a welfare official from the Juvenile Justice Department/Child Care was also engaged and spoke with the parties,” the Police stated.
Authorities said it was agreed that a meeting involving the parents, the child’s mother and the welfare officer would be held at the school on Monday, May 4, at 09:00h. The latest development comes days after relatives of the child raised concerns over the handling of the incident, alleging that the pupil was attacked by two other children during the examination period, while parents outside the school compound reportedly watched helplessly as the school gate remained locked.
The incident sparked concerns among relatives about student safety and the response following the alleged assault.
Police have since indicated that the matter remains under review as investigations continue.
