Police Constable 23554 Tofan Reid of Lot 42 Stanleytown, New Amsterdam Berbice was reportedly driving motorcycle CJ1329 south along Main Street in New Amsterdam on Friday evening with his cousin Jerry Hawker as his pillion rider when, at about 19:50h, hire car HC6430 drove out of the intersection at Main and Philadelphia Streets and collided with Reid and Hawker on the motorcycle.

The impact flung the two men several feet from the scene of the collision and caused Reid to sustain a fractured leg and abrasions to the upper body, while Hawker, of 45 Stanleytown, received head injuries. They were both rushed in an unconscious state to the New Amsterdam Public Hospital, where they were admitted as patients, while the driver of the car, a 31-year-old man from West Canje Berbice, was taken into custody and is assisting police with the investigation.
One eyewitness related that the car collided suddenly with the back of the motorcycle, and it was fortunate that the men were both wearing helmets, while Reid related that he was returning home from an errand he had run for his mother when the accident occurred.
The 18-year-old police constable has been stationed at the Anna Regina Police Station for the past five months. He was in Berbice on a short vacation, and was expected to return to work the day after the accident. He had taken his 26-year-old cousin along for the ride when he left to run the errand for his mother.
