Policeman under investigation for attempted rape

Police on the Essequibo Coast, Region Two (Pomeroon-Supenaam) are investigating one of their own after a mother of two alleged that a Police Officer attempted to rape her.

The 30-year-old woman from Richmond Housing Scheme alleged that on Sunday evening, the Policeman offered her a drop with a Guyana Police Force (GPF) minibus. She related that it was while in the vehicle that the Policeman started touching her and attempted to kiss her.

During an interview with Guyana Times, the mother related that her husband was arrested for an offence and she went to the station with her children. She said that it was getting late and she was stranded on the road when the officer (name withheld) offered her a ride home.

On the journey, she said the officer asked her if she ever cheated on her husband. The mother said she was so ashamed because her children were in the vehicle. She said she refused the officer’s advances after he began touching her.

According to the woman, she and her children exited the vehicle but when she reached into her home, she noticed that Policeman was still parked outside.

“I was so scared, I had a cutlass next to me, I keep looking at all the doors, I was scared if that officer came and do anything to me,” the woman related. She subsequently reported the matter at the Anna Regina Police Station.

When contacted, Commander of G Division (Essequibo Coast-Islands), Khalid Pareshram, said an investigation has been launched and the file will be sent to the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) for advice.
