Pomeroon boat-builder jailed for narco-trafficking

Hafeez Butters, a 29-year-old boat-builder of Jacklow, Upper Pomeroon River, Region Two, has been sentenced to two years’ imprisonment and fined $863,550 after pleading guilty to a charge of possession of narcotics for the purpose of trafficking when he appeared virtually before Magistrate Tamieka Clarke at the Suddie Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday.

Butters had been intercepted with 959.5 grams of cannabis on Monday, March 24, in an incident that occurred on the Lima Public Road on the Essequibo Coast, and had been charged under Section 5 (1) (a) (i) of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (Control) Act, Chapter 10:10.
When the charge was read to him in court, Butters pleaded guilty as charged and the sentence of two years’ imprisonment and $863,550 fine was imposed on him.
