A two-year-old girl from Karawab, Upper Pomeroon, Region Two (Pomeroon-Supenaam), has tested positive for the novel coronavirus as cases throughout the country continue to increase.
This was disclosed by Dr Shineer Reid at the Regional Health Emergency Committee on Friday at the Regional State House in Region Two.
Guyana Times understands that the toddler was admitted to the Oscar Joseph Hospital at Charity and did not display any symptoms of the deadly virus.
The child was later transferred to the Suddie Hospital and it was there a COVID-19 test was administered and returned as positive. The child has been placed in isolated quarantine and is being monitored.
Further, Dr Reid said that the Suddie Hospital was in bad condition as the health facility lacked basic medical items. She revealed that health officials were forced to re-use equipment that should not be reused.
Region Two Chairman Devanand Ramdatt stated that the newly-elected government was ready to ensure that everyone was protected and, as such, has secured some 65,000 Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) tests for continuous testing throughout the length and breadth of Guyana.
