Pork knocker loses 4 fingers after being attacked by two men at Balamani Backdam

The Police are currently on the hunt for two men who allegedly attacked 38-year-old Derwin Grant, causing him to lose four fingers and suffering severe injuries, at Balamani Backdam, Cuyuni River, Region Seven (Cuyuni-Mazaruni).

The incident occurred just about 21:30h on Saturday last.

In a statement, the Police said that Grant visited one Grampy’s Shop earlier in June where he consumed several alcoholic beverages and paid with one pennyweight of raw gold. The estimated value of the gold is said to be $15,000 and the man’s bill was lower. However, he did not collect any change and left the shop.

On Saturday, the man returned to the shop and when the shopkeeper requested payment, he said that he was still owed by the shop. This resulted in an argument and he subsequently left the shop.

While walking on the road, two men attached Grant from behind and him several chops about his body with a cutlass. He received a deep chop to his right shoulder, a chop to his right hand which severed 4 of his fingers, two deep cuts to his left hand and one to his right knee.

The injured man was then left lying on the roadside for some time. However, the suspects returned with a mattress after some time and picked him up, took him to the Sand Hill Landing and left him at Akeem’s Shop.

Grant was later transported to the Bartica Hospital where he was admitted in a serious condition.

Investigations are still ongoing.
