Powerade 50-miler to heat up West Side

Once again the country’s top wheelsmen will take to the roadways of West Demerara this Sunday as they compete in the seventh annual Banks DIH sponsored Powerade 50-mile cycling road race.

The 50-mile journey which is organized by National Cycling Coach, Hassan Mohammed will start from 08:00h with riders taking to the starting line in front of the Wales Police Station, West Bank Demerara. The ride will then take the riders to Bushy Park, East Bank Essequibo before returning to conclude meters short of the Demerara Harbour Bridge at Schnoord.

The first six finishers in the open category (seniors and juniors) as well as the top three finishers in the juniors, the veterans, the ladies and the mountain bike categories will be rewarded for their efforts.

Last year’s race saw Team Evolution cyclists dominating the podium places. Orville Hinds, who will not be available to defend his title won the race in a time of one hour 21 minutes 22 seconds. Hinds’s teammates Akeem Wilkinson and Marlon “Fishy” Williams placed second and third respectively. Hinds is currently competing in French Guiana.

Another Team Evolution cyclist, Stephen Fernandes, finished sixth overall and was adjudged winner of the veterans’ under-50 category. The junior category was won by Deoraj Garbarran, Christopher Cornelius was second and Raphael Leung third. In the mountain bike category, Keon Thomas was first, Julio Melville second and Wayne Nurse third.

Representatives of the company would be present to witness the races and assist in the presentation of prizes at the conclusion.
