Powerlifters test their strength at today’s Intermediate/Masters championships

The test of raw physical power will occur at the St Stanislaus College auditorium today when many of the country’s top powerlifters go on show in the Intermediate/Masters championships.
A total of 33 persons have already signed on to test their physical mettle. Three of those persons are already over the age of 65 – an age at which ordinary mortals retire.
Today’s big attraction is set to be 74-year-old Nairanjan Singh, Guyana’s oldest competing, gold medal-winning, and record-holding powerlifter.
Seventy-year-old Noel Cummings, also an active body builder, will be in action as well; as would be the 66-year-old Frank Tucker.
In 2017, Martin Webster of Buddy’s Gym, “Big” John Edwards of Space Gym, and Farouk Abdool of the Hardcore Gym — all masters athletes — rewrote the record books. Sunday’s events start with ‘Flight A’ at 09:00h; then ‘flight B’ from 13:00h. The participating athletes are required to be at the venue for weigh-in at 07:00h.
