The People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C) has extended congratulatory wishes to President-elect Donald Trump, who won the United States of America presidential election on Tuesday.

In a statement on Wednesday, the Party stressed the importance the elections outcome has on the relations between Guyana and the United States. These relations, the former ruling party noted, are based on shared values of democracy, freedom and mutual respect.

“Mr Trump is assuming this huge responsibility at a time when our world is facing great dangers. In his victory speech, we were pleased to learn that Mr Trump emphasised the need to improve relations with other countries of the world. We strongly support that view. We can assure Mr Trump of our support as he pursues that goal,” the PPP said of the 45th US President.

Moreover, the PPP also congratulated the American people in choosing their President in a democratic and open manner, while wishing the new US President well as he works to promote the interests of his country.

Only Monday last, US Ambassador to Guyana Perry Holloway assured that there will be no changes in the policies between the two countries. In fact, he said the US looks forward to continuing its relationship with Guyana and that there will be no significant changes to US policies here, no matter who is voted into office.

“I have been working in the US Government for 28 years and I have worked for both Republican and Democratic Presidents and my experience has been that US policies do not change when whoever is occupying the White House changes, so I look forward for us having continued close ties with Guyana no matter who wins tomorrow night. I will not talk about the individual candidates, but I would say it is one thing to campaign and another to govern, but my experience is the policies do not change significantly when the White House candidates change,” he told the media in an invited comment.
