PPP welcomes fresh, youthful faces on candidate lists
…as APNU/AFC recycles old blood
While the Opposition People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C) welcomed a band of new blood and youthful faces to its team, the governing David Granger led APNU/AFC retained a large number of its senior citizens, many of whom have not been very efficient and were almost non-functional in Government.
Friday’s Nomination Day proceedings saw the introduction of several new, and surprising faces into the political scene as parties prepare for the upcoming March 2, 2020 General and Regional Elections.
Among those on the Opposition People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C) lists of candidates are former People’s National Congress (PNC) Member of Parliament, Anthony Vieira; former President of the Georgetown Chamber of Commerce & Industry (GCCI), Deodat Indar, and prominent Attorney-at-Law Sanjeev Datadin.
In a statement, the PPP/C noted that not only is its lists of candidates impressive but demonstrates that it is truly a national party, with competent candidates drawn from across Guyana, who reflect our country’s unique diversity.
“This diversity illustrates that the PPP/C, in this its 70th anniversary, remains relevant and rooted amongst the Guyanese people and nation. It has fielded lists of competent candidates to carry out elected positions in the 10 Administrative Regions and in the Legislature. These bring youth, energy, experience, technical and professional competence and a wealth of knowledge from all walks of life,” the PPP/C noted.
The Opposition party went on to outline that these candidates, both old and new, as well as thousand others across Guyana, have committed to deliver the PPP/C’s vision and plans for the development of the country and of all of its people.
“Many of the candidates are new and many are young, many have decided that it was time after nearly five years of the APNU/AFC coalition government that they could not sit on the fence anymore and decided to take that brave step forward to join the PPP/C as the only party with the policies and programmes that could restore Guyana to a development path for the benefit of all. Many candidates have already proven their capabilities in their own professions, whilst others have demonstrated unquestionable proficiency during the Party’s tenure in Government…” the missive from the Opposition stated.
The Head of the PPP/C’s lists of candidates is the party’s General Secretary and Opposition Leader Bharrat Jagdeo, while the Deputy Representative is its Presidential Candidate, Irfaan Ali.
Meanwhile, the APNU/AFC’s National Top-up List included candidates such as General Secretary of the Guyana Teachers Union (GTU), Coretta McDonald; Attorney Roysdale Forde, and Head of the Office of Climate Change (OCC), Janelle Christian.
Notably, however, current Agriculture Minister Noel Holder, a member of the AFC fraction, was absent from coalition’s lists of candidates.
Despite this, however, Head of the coalition’s lists of candidates, Presidential Candidate David Granger, had told reporters “we don’t do surprises” when asked if there were any on their lists.
Nevertheless, Granger, in a statement later on Friday, expressed confidence that the coalition has the “winning lists”.
He noted that they have nominated candidates who enjoy the confidence of the parties’ members and supporters.
“They have been found competent to lead in the National Assembly and in the Regional Democratic Councils.
They reflect differences in age, ethnicity, gender, geographic and occupation,” he stated in the missive.
The coalition’s Presidential Candidate went on to point out that they have prepared its partners thoroughly for the upcoming elections.
