Preparations in full swing for PPP’s Congress

Preparations have intensified as the People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C) ramps up its activities for one of the most important events on its calendar this year, the Party’s Congress.
PPP Executive Secretary Zulfikar Mustapha, during a press conference on Monday at Freedom House, Robb Street, Georgetown, highlighted that the Congress would provide for a comprehensive overview of the Party’s performance since the last Congress and outline a strategic direction in keeping with the Party’s Programme and Guyana’s present social, political and economic situation.

He said the delegates and observers would examine the A Partnership for National Unity/Alliance For Change (APNU/AFC) Government’s stewardship so far, initiate discussions and make recommendations to the Party on the way forward.
Mustapha also said that emphasis would be placed on strengthening the Party’s structure and unity, as the PPP seeks to provide sound, consistent, steady and reliable leadership, and to continue to work towards improving the quality of lives of all Guyanese.
Mustapha, who is the Chairman of the Central Congress Committee, said the body was meeting weekly as the momentum intensified, and reported regularly to the Executive Committee of the Party.
He noted too that people on the ground were in full preparation for this upcoming event.
“At the level of the Party, groups across the country are in the process of preparing motions and resolutions, initiating fundraising activities, identifying delegates, observers and nominees to contest the elections to the Central Committee of the Party. All logistical arrangements are well on stream. At the local level, our comrades are well advanced in their preparation and the mood of the people in Essequibo is very high as they prepare to host the PPP for our 31st Congress,” he expressed.
According to the Executive Secretary, the highlight of the Congress will be the Central Committee’s Report to be presented by the Party’s General Secretary Clement Rohee, the address by Opposition Leader Bharrat Jagdeo and elections to the Central Committee of the PPP.
Congress will be hosted at the Cotton Field Secondary School in Essequibo from December 17 to 19, under the theme “Strengthen the Party, Defend Democracy, Onward to Victory”.
