Despite pressure from various sections of civil society as well as from the international community, President David Granger is still unsure as to when the constitutionally overdue elections would be held.
The Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) has already indicated that they would be ready for General and Regional Elections by the end of February 2020. In fact, GECOM has already announced plans to commence the Claims and Objections exercise from October 1.
At the Ministry of the Presidency on Wednesday morning, Granger told media operatives, “I hope this evening, I would be able to make a public announcement on the date.”
The Head of State mentioned that he has not seen the timeline created by the Guyana Elections Commission as such, is awaiting additional details.
“Last Thursday, the Chairman wrote me and she indicated when the Commission would be ready. I responded to her and I had discussions with the cabinet yesterday and naturally, we would like to get from her, more details. So we have accepted her date…We don’t have a copy of the timeline.”
The President is expected to address the nation tonight in relation to the hosting of General and Regional Elections.
