President David Granger was on Friday given a status update on the progress of the work of United Nations’ (UN) agencies in Guyana during a courtesy call made by United Nations Resident Coordinator Ms. Mikiko Tanaka at State House.

With hope of achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), a total of fifteen UN agencies had executed a number of projects in and around the country in 2017. The UN agencies have also conducted several capacity-building programmes with ministries and Government agencies. Added to that, a series of community sensitization projects have been held based on several issues, such as gender-based violence, HIV/AIDS, corporal punishment, and nutrition.
President Granger has committed to working with the UN programmes to guarantee their success. And as such, he has appointed Public Affairs Minister Dawn Hastings-Williams to work alongside Ms. Tanaka, to consolidate the UN programmes and to conduct an analysis so that implementation can be more effective.
In an attempt to create greater collaborations with the UN agencies, President Granger has invited the Heads of those programmes to a roundtable meeting consisting of Cabinet members.
This meeting would allow for direct interaction between cabinet members and the programmes’ heads.
