President urges New Thriving proprietors to embrace Agro-processing

As the New Thriving Chinese Restaurant opened its latest branch, President David Granger has encouraged the owners to adopt agro-processing ventures as the business expands its operations. The Head of State made these comments on Friday evening as the restaurant launched its Providence, East Bank Demerara branch, amid much pomp and ceremony showcasing key aspects of the Chinese culture.

the restaurant. President Granger stressed that in this vein, New Thriving can add its contribution to Guyana’s “green economy”.

The President also highlighted the many achievements and rich cultural practices that Chinese have brought to Guyana over the last 160 years.

The opening saw invitees being greeted to the tantalising sounds of drums and cymbals, while dancers in dragon costumes intricately moved as the rhythms penetrated. First Lady Sandra Granger was given the honour of cutting the ribbon in the presence of the President, Chinese Ambassador to Guyana, Cui Jianchun, Mrs Cui Jianchun, Prime Minister Moses Nagamootoo and his wife Sita Nagamootoo and New Thriving’s representatives, Mr Xiao and Ms Ping.

Persaud, in offering congratulatory remarks, recalled the humble beginnings of New Thriving on Regent Street, Georgetown. He pointed out that the business was able to regroup and recapture its customers after a fire gutted the operations several years ago.

Meanwhile, Chinese Ambassador Cui Jianchun told the gathering that he was indeed happy that Guyana’s Government continues to encourage Chinese business operations in Guyana, expressing hope that the newest branch can provide its intended services to the public.

A number of prominent officials were present at the dinner, including Government Ministers, Parliamentary Opposition Members, fellow business proprietors and former President Donald Ramotar. Those present were treated to a buffet-style dinner and were serenaded with dance, song and a brief runway show by local fashion designer, Sonia Noel.

The new facility, which sits atop the Massy Supermarket, can accommodate about 1000 persons standing at a cocktail event and about 600 individuals seated at dinner. The New Thriving Chinese Restaurant commenced operations in 1993.
