Director of Prisons calls for reforms during Mazaruni Prison

Director of Prisons Nicklon Elliot during the inspection of the Mazaruni Prison

In a determined effort to enhance operational standards and strengthen communication within the prison system, Director of Prisons, Nicklon Elliot conducted a comprehensive day and night inspection at Mazaruni Prison.
The inspection aimed to supervise operations, improve communication channels among the Director, officers, and inmates, and facilitate well-informed decision-making processes.
During the visit, Director Elliot stressed the urgent need for thorough evaluations of the existing Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) in prisons. Acknowledging the critical role of meticulous assessment, this initiative will promote active engagement with staff at all levels, encouraging direct interaction and feedback.
This proactive approach not only reinforces communication but also addresses potential issues within the prison system. The primary objective is to enhance overall operational efficiency and create a safer environment for both staff and inmates.
These efforts follow recent statements by Home Affairs Minister Robeson Benn, emphasising the need for continuous vigilance within the prison system.
He emphasised the Ministry’s commitment to fortify prison security after several prisoners, including notorious criminal Royden Williams, known as “Smallie,” escaped from penitentiaries nationwide. Williams, who had been under a death sentence, managed to escape from Mazaruni Prison in May 2023 with the assistance of prison officials.
His escape exposed vulnerabilities in the prison system, prompting a thorough investigation that led to the identification and charging of individuals involved in his escape.
In response to these challenges, Director Elliot’s inspection underscores the ongoing commitment to reform, ensuring a secure and effective prison environment in the face of evolving security threats. (G9)
