Prison officer caught smuggling prohibited items into Mazaruni Prison

A junior prison officer was on Wednesday morning caught read handed during a sting operation as he was attempting to smuggle several prohibited items into the Mazaruni Prison.
The rank reportedly was off-duty but was seen sneaking into the correctional facility via a sea dam. He was nabbed as he made his way to the Bachelor’s quarters by senior ranks that were monitoring his moves.
A search was conducted on his person during which nine cellular phones, six chargers, four headsets, one GTT sim-card, a quantity of marijuana and two packs of bamboo cigarette paper were found. He was handed over to the Police and is expected to be charged shortly. An investigation has been launched.
It is based on these occurrences that prison officials, along with Police ranks, conduct raids at the various holding facilities. Over the past months, several contraband items were discovered during raids.
In fact, over 40 improvised weapons, 20 cellphones, three tattoo machines, 28 packs of cigarettes, 33 lighters and drugs were seized at the Timehri, Lusignan and New Amsterdam Prisons in August.
