– 11 injured
Eleven persons, including eight Police Officers of the Guyana Police Force (GPF) and three prisoners are now nursing injuries at the Leonora Cottage Hospital and West Demerara Regional Hospital after the prison truck in which they were travelling crashed into a pharmacy.
The incident occurred at around 07:30h on Friday, as the prison truck was reportedly transferring prisoners from Essequibo to the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts, where they were all scheduled to be make appearances.
Guyana Times understandsthat the vehicle was about to pass the Tiwari Pharmacy, located in Uitvlugt,West Coast Demerara (WCD), when it almost collided with a truck coming out from the Uitvlugt Estate.
However, the officer driving the prison truck turned to avoid the collision and crashed into the pharmacy, located on the public road. Most of the passengers sustained minor injuries, with the exception of two Police Officers and one prisoner, who suffered fractured limbs.
According to the Police, no prisoners managed to escape from the vehicle as public spirited persons rendered assistance. The prison vehicle, which had to be pulled out of the drug store, was badly mangled.
The pharmacy was reported to be in a terrible condition and major repairs will have to be done to have it fixed.However, no one inside of the store received any injuries.
Reports reaching this publication also suggest that the estate truck involved in the accident sped away from the scene; however, this was not confirmed.
