Prisoner found dead in Lethem lock-ups

Police in Lethem, Region Nine (Upper Takutu-Upper Essequibo) were confronted on Sunday morning with the body of a convicted prisoner in their lock-ups.
It was reported that at about 01:10h on Sunday, the convicted prisoner, Allen Thomas, 25, of Shea Village, South Rupununi, was found in a sitting position in what appears to be an apparent suicide at the Lethem Police Station.
At the time, the man was only clad in his underwear. He was subsequently rushed to the Lethem Regional Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

On Friday last, Thomas had appeared before Magistrate Allan Wilson at the Lethem Magistrate’s Court on a charge of assault causing actual bodily harm, where he pleaded guilty, and was sentenced to 12 months’ imprisonment.
According to prison officials, Thomas was the only prisoner in the lock-ups at the time, and was awaiting transportation to the Georgetown Prison.
The body is at the Lethem Regional Hospital’s mortuary awaiting a post-mortem examination.
In a report from the Guyana Police Force on Sunday, it was stated that investigators from the Police Force’s Office of Professional Responsibility are conducting investigations into the matter. (G9)
