Prisoner hangs self in Mahdia lock-ups

– OPR launches investigation

A 53-year-old prisoner was found hanging in a cell at Mahdia Police Station on Wednesday.
Reports are that Shameer Khan of 111 Miles Mahdia, Region Eight (Potaro-Siparuni) was discovered by Police around 15:40h.
The now deceased man was arrested and charged for simple larceny and fined $40,000, with an alternative sentence of 18 months’ imprisonment. He was unable to pay the fine and was placed in custody.
The body of Khan is presently at Mahdia Hospital mortuary awaiting a post-mortem examination.
The matter is being investigated by the Police’s Office of Professional Responsibility (OPR).
